Week 12 · Generative AI: promise, limits and judgement
MLO3, MLO4 · PLO2, PLO4 Test-bench AIAS 5 (formative) P3 AIAS 3
Overview (about 15 hours). We critically evaluate claims about generative AI in education, test an AI tool on a real task from your setting, and plan your P3 prototype at the right AIAS level.
Before the seminar (about 3 hours)
- Read Kasneci et al. (2023) and the DfE's guidance on generative AI in education.
- Evidence check (10 min): for one claim from either source, who says it, on what evidence, and does it generalise to your setting?
- Bring one real, anonymised task from your practice.
Seminar 3 · on campus, 17:30–19:30 UK
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0:00–0:10 | Retrieval warm-up: 5 questions on Units 1–2 |
| 0:10–0:35 | Structured debate: "Generative AI will improve feedback in my setting." Every claim must cite evidence and its limits. |
| 0:35–1:05 | AI test-bench: generate feedback, an explanation or a resource for your task, then audit it for accuracy, alignment, bias, accessibility and data protection |
| 1:05–1:15 | Break |
| 1:15–1:45 | Prototype planning: draft your P3 plan (problem, change, evidence base, AIAS level, risks); critical-friend trios |
| 1:45–2:00 | Plenary: "What would make this change worth it?"; exit ticket |
Async route. (1) Debate thread: you're given a role (for, against or evidence-checker); post one claim with evidence and a limitation by Thu, and challenge two posts by Sun. (2) Test-bench worksheet: run your task through the approved tool and complete the five-part audit table. (3) Upload your P3 plan by Sun 23:59 UK.
Portfolio step
Upload your P3 plan by the end of week 13 for short peer and tutor comments. Then read one paper on your prototype's mechanism and post a 150-word test-bench reflection.
AI this week. The test-bench is AIAS 5 (AI Exploration) and formative only. The P3 prototype is AIAS 3: check every AI-generated element and log your edits. Never enter personal data into any tool.
Support
Debate roles (speaker, evidence-checker, note-taker); a "claim, evidence, limitation" sentence-starter sheet; the module's approved tool for anyone without access at work.
